As I have often mentioned,
Microsoft releases updates and patches for Windows
every Tuesday evening. On Tuesday, April 15, 2008, Microsoft
released the long-awaited “Service Pack 1” (or SP1
for short) for Windows Vista.
Some facts about Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 (SP1):
- Your computer will begin downloading it
automatically on or after 3am, Wednesday, April 16. Little or no
action is required on your part. During this download Internet access
may seem slower than usual.
- SP1 is 1,100 to 1,500 MB in size
(That's 1.1 to 1.5 GB).
- It may take up to a half hour for SP1 to download
via broadband/high speed Internet services such
as Cable, DSL, Satellite, or Fiber Optic.
Downloading for dial-up users could take up to
30 days. Alternately, you can order a copy
of
Windows Vista SP1 on CD from
Skylark NetWorks (Saunders Tech).- During the download, a small Windows Update icon,
like the one shown at right, will appear in the
Notification area in the lower right hand corner of
the screen (to the left of the time/clock).
- SP1 may take up to one hour install. If you computer
notifies you that it is “Installing Updates” do not
interrupt or attempt to shut off your computer.
- If you are shutting off your computer, and your
computer notifies you that it is “Installing
Updates”, leave it alone, and don’t worry if it
seems to be taking too long. Your computer will shut
down when it is finished.
- If you frequently leave your computer on overnight
you might not notice any of the activity mentioned
in this message. Don’t worry. Your computer
automatically downloaded and installed SP1. If so, you may notice the
previously mentioned icon at the lower right of your screen.
Pointing at it may show a message indicating that
‘Updates were installed’.
I hope you find this

what to expect when you turn on or shut down your
computer, for the first time, on or after Wednesday,
April 16.

free at the
Microsoft Windows Update web site. Broadband
Internet Users (Cable, DSL, Satellite, or Fiber Optic)
can download them in less than 30 minutes, but dial-up
Internet users may experience download times lasting 3
hours to several days.
